“Connecticut’s Community Health Center’s
Champions of Change”
Westbrook, CT - On June 5, 2004 the Community Health Center Association of Connecticut sponsored the inaugural meeting of the Community
Health Center Leadership Institute. The goal of The Community
Health Leadership Institute is to create a unified network
of people to make change in the state’s health policy.
The Anthem Foundation of Connecticut, which was instrumental
in the success of the retreat, demonstrated its commitment
to creating sound structural change in the state’s health
care delivery and financing systems. As a result of funding
to the Community Health Center Association of Connecticut, the Community
Health Leadership Institute was able to provide community
health centers in Connecticut the opportunity to raise their
voices, share ideas, and to actively work together for the
change that is necessary for access to quality care for all
to occur. Board members from Charter Oak Health Center, Kelson
Ettienne-Modeste, Gary Husmer, Luz Raquel Rivera and Janet
Rivera Bright, joined their colleagues from across the state
at a day long workshop and retreat on the Power of One, Strength
of Many.
Evelyn Barnum, Executive Director of CPCA explained, “We
wanted to give a message of thanks and encouragement to the
people who are leaders in community health centers and discuss
how their continued commitment to change will affect positive
outcomes for their community health center patients.”
The day included inspirational addresses from Juan Figueroa,
President of the Anthem Foundation, Connecticut State Senator
Toni N. Harp and Dr. Marilyn Gaston, former U.S. Assistant
Surgeon General. Dr. Gaston challenged the audience to “Change
the story of Community Health Centers NOW!” She encouraged
the participants to do this by having an active voice and
role in promoting health care reform. Through a revolution
in health care, Gaston shared her vision of ultimately achieving
universal health care for all citizens.
Don Thompson, President of the CPCA Board of Directors, expressed
that, “It is important that we have the support of those
directly involved in the community health care system. They
are the people who the federal governments want to hear from
and that are who policy makers are going to listen to on the
issues that are debated when it comes to funding the Community
Health Centers.”
The CPCA was established in 1989 as the voice of Connecticut’s
not-for-profit community health centers. The organization’s
mission is to promote and further the delivery of comprehensive,
accessible, family-oriented community-based health care. Their
primary focus is education of the public, health policy makers,
and health care providers. CPCA provides on-going information
on community health center clinical performance and programs
to the people of Connecticut, the state’s decision-makers
and elected officials. With the inception of the Community
Health Leadership Institute, CPCA will support community leaders
in their efforts to assure that community health centers are
recognized for the tremendous services that they provide.
